What are the benefits of learning how to regulate your emotions early on?

When you get emotionally overwhelmed, your brain can shift into survival mode. Here is where your ability to think clearly, weigh options, and act intentionally becomes limited. This is what psychologists call emotional dysregulation.

People with lower emotion regulation skills often experience their nervous system firing at full speed to deal with everyday challenges in life, and are unable to cope with the emotions they're experiencing. That makes impulsive, harmful or disadvantageous decisions more likely.

The thing is, emotion regulation is a skill.
Research shows that when you build this skill, everything changes:

→ You become more aware of your emotional cues
→ You can downshift from stress faster
→ You make better long-term decisions in an intense moment
→ You strengthen your relationships
→ You increase your overall wellbeing

You don’t get more emotionally regulated or make better decisions by cutting emotions out, it’s about practising how to hold and process them.
