Why suppressing or ignoring emotions is the opposite of resilience

What if there was a skill that could drastically change the course of your life? Would you learn it?

Emotion regulation is your ability to notice, understand, and shift your emotional reactions so you can stay in control of your choices. It’s not about ignoring feelings, it’s about managing them in a way that helps you reach your goals.

When you can regulate well, you build mental resilience: the capacity to cope with stress, bounce back, and stay steady under pressure.

Research shows that strong emotion regulation leads to:

→ Better decision-making
→ More prosocial behaviour
→ Better relationships
→ Better wellbeing
→ And a stronger ability to “down-shift” from high arousal (stress, anger, anxiety)

But when we can’t regulate? Our nervous system can take over. High emotional arousal can push us into impulsive choices, risky behaviour, or actions we regret later.

The good news is that emotion regulation is learnable, just like any other skill. When you learn to read your body’s signals and shift your state, your decisions, relationships, and future change with it.
